How to keep your static caravan warm in winter

Whether you’re a new or experienced caravan owner, it’s essential to know how to keep your static caravan warm during the chilly months. Learning how to tackle frozen pipes, condensation, and mould will help to keep your caravan safe. Not to mention minimise maintenance bills!

Central heating

Most modern caravans arrive with pre-installed central heating. But, if you have an older model with no central heating system, adding one can soon become expensive.

External insulation

One of the best methods for retaining heat within your caravan during winter involves upgrading your external insulation. The majority of static caravans are fitted with aluminium cladding; however, other great options include thermoplastic, rigid vinyl or wood. Upgrades to your external insulation can be costly at first, but will undoubtedly save you money in the long run.

Underfloor heating

In a caravan, space is often at a premium. Underfloor heating is a smart solution that saves space (no radiators!) as well as distributing heat efficiently. As a bonus, you’ll be able to walk around in bare feet!

Double-glazed windows

Windows and doors are typically where most heat escapes in static caravans. The latest double glazing can reduce heat loss by up to 50 percent. To ensure your windows and doors are insulating efficiently, check carefully for damage and draughts. Even tiny cracks must be fixed before the winter! Insulated Curtains

Perhaps the simplest way to reduce heat loss through your windows or doors is to fit insulated thermal curtains. These thick drapes are proven to keep draughts out and warm air in. They also help to soundproof your caravan!

Floor insulation

If you have laminate flooring, an effective method for improving insulation is to install a thermal underlay. You could also add some thick rugs, as these are good for holding in the heat.

Fireplace

If your static caravan has a fireplace, how about turning it into a heat source with a gas fire or wood-burning stove? This can be a great way to make your static caravan look cosy as well as feel warm. If you don’t already have a fireplace, investing in one can be a simple way to boost your caravan’s resale value.

Radiators

If you don’t have underfloor heating, your caravan likely has radiators. In that case, it’s important to avoid blocking them with furniture or other items.

Radiators heat the nearby air, causing it to rise and warm colder parts of your caravan. If you prevent this natural warm airflow, your heating will be less efficient, and you won’t feel the benefit.

Portable heaters

If you’re staying in your caravan over the winter, having a portable heater on-hand is always a good idea. They are also an excellent back-up if the heating ever fails.

Portable heaters come in different shapes and sizes. Electric fan heaters are cheap, light and great at heating small rooms quickly, but the heat can soon be lost if you let in a draught. In contrast, electric oil-filled heaters are more reliable but typically take up extra room. They also take a little longer to warm up.

Trace Heating

Keeping your caravan warm when it is empty

If you aren’t planning on staying in your static this winter, here are some sound precautions to keep it safe:

• Install a time-controlled thermostat.
• Ask the park maintenance staff to check the condition of your caravan and report any issues.
• Carry out a drain down to prevent pipes freezing and bursting.
• Insulate windows with window film. After placing window film on windows, heat it with a hairdryer to shrink it and seal out the draughts.

Finally, a word of warning. Before making any changes or upgrades to your static caravan, check any terms and conditions or contractual agreements with the park. Also, if you purchase any accessories, such as curtains or heaters, first check that they meet the required safety standards.
